Description:

This film documents the life of St. Brendan, the navigator (5th century). It describes his founding of the monasteries at Ardfert and Clonfert. But Brendan was a lover of the sea - he wanted to know what lay beyond the great sea known to us as the North Atlantic. Legend has it that he saw in a vision a land beyond this sea. According to manuscripts he and the monks built a boat, which they launched from Brandon's Creek, Co. Kerry and sailed to the New World enduring many hardships and turmoils. There are many written versions of his voyage - the oldest is in a German library. His name lives on as the first of the great Irish missionaries and his story was an inspiration in the centuries that followed his death.
