At the beginning of the 20th century white Australians were convinced that the aboriginal race was doomed to extinction. Missionaries were moved to make a last big effort to penetrate the remoter areas and win the remnant over to Christianity. But in their enthusiasm to smooth the pillow of a dying race, some may have been more in tune with white Australia's racist policy than the gospel of Jesus Christ.
