| Laurence
O'Toole, monk and abbot of Glendalough in
the 12th century, was brother-in-law of Dermot
McMurrough, King of Leinster. Aoife, his niece,
later became the wife of the Norman invader,
Strongbow. With such family connections, it
probably surprised nobody but himself when
he was appointed Archbishop of Dublin in 1161.
